Rock Climbing in Sweden
Text and photos by Jonas Paulsson

Tired of lining up at the crags of southern Europe? Looking for something new, something exotic? Want to climb multi pitch routes on remote crags or do you prefer shorter routes within the city limits? Cracks or faces? Trad or sport? Rock climbing in Sweden has it all.

Rock climbing in Sweden is not obvious. Compared with Norway Sweden is flat, but on the other hand Sweden has a more stable climate. The mountains of Norway form a huge barrier for the clouds coming in from the North Sea and while the Norwegian climbers look at their mountains from the rainy valleys Swedish climbers enjoy themselves at their sunny crags. The warm and sunny climate makes Sweden a perfect country for a summer visit.

A two or three week stay will give you many opportunities to experience the beauty and contrast of the country, from the sunny sea cliffs of Kullaberg in the south to the bigger crags in the north with their spectacular views of endless forest landscapes. You can go crack climbing on perfect granite on the west coast or try the technical wall climbing in Stockholm. Whether you are a trad or a sport climber you will always find something that suits you.

If you are interested in more than just the climbing there are endless possibilities. Take a day off from climbing and limber up those sore muscles, either in the refreshing sea at the coasts or in one of the many (warmer) lakes. If climbing doesn't give you enough workout then you can always try the night clubs of Stockholm and Gothenburg. The picturesque villages of the countryside, with their red houses and friendly locals, will give you a different experience. Whoever you are and whatever your aspirations may be, a trip to Sweden is sure to be a memorable holiday.
